Chapter Eight -- Lillyfield, Bamboo

1990 - 2009

Created by Peter 14 years ago
The retirement home Beryl and Luke built in Lillyfield district, Bamboo was well-constructed, large, comfortable with all modern conveniences, had a front lawn, kitchen garden, garage, worksheds, laundry and sizable plot behind for planting and farming. They should have enjoyed their last years together in a wonderful home, the two of them finally having time for each other and themselves with no stressful children running around. Life came close but it was not exactly as planned. Dad took another job managing a poultry and eggs farm, did that a number of years but that meant he was home less and never really got the time when he was most able, to farm his plot of land. Beryl enjoyed the rest, the peaceful if slower pace of life but showed little interest in anything beyond. I feel sure from time to time she itched to start another shop but she also spoke less. These were her declining years, fading vision, hearing, taste and strength. Yet though she suffered all the commonest problems of age, and complained often enough she never seemed resentful or bitter. On the whole Beryl accepted her fate and trusted her life in the hands of God. She attended the nearby little Catholic church on the hill for as long as her health and strength permitted, and she loved and feared God. When her final breath was expired I am sure her thin and frail body was wrapped in the loving hand of God and that her soul set free was taken immediately to heaven. Be with us all Mother, in the Holy Spirit. In your love we are confident and we pray to be with you again in heaven in our time.
