Chapter Four -- Mr & Mrs Lamm

1948 - 1953

Luke had just returned from the war in England. As a thank-you gift the British government had awarded a training scholarship (like a GI Bill) to help returning soldiers re-integrate into post-war society. Daddy chose for his scholarship an Accounting school in Kingston. At first he stayed with an aunt but after a while she pushed him out and he had to take a little rented apartment. He was unhappy of his circumstance of course but determined not to let it trip him up. He continued his studies and later graduated with credit. I consider this temporary misfortune a blessing in disguise for reasons you will shortly understand. He missed his home, his brothers, his mother far away in the rural hills of St Ann parish. He wrote home regularly in his beautiful handwritten script. The words were writ large in a sort of Roman mixed caps style... letter terminations ended not with a flourish but firm, straight and a rising pen like an exclamation mark. He likely needed a lot of writing paper. When he could he also sent money. Luke began to visit the haberdashery for his writing supplies and necessities. Sure he could not help noticing the pretty young sales girl behind the counter. Luke wore glasses, looked brainy and one of the very few young men who seemed to care enough to write to anyone. After a few exchanges he must have realized also the above-average intelligence in that slip of a girl. Their romance was swift, deep and true. In months they were married and now they would be making a new life together.
