Beryl was born in September 1917 at Mount James, St Andrew parish in Jamaica. Almost nothing is known about her early years, those memories now lost or forgotten. Beryl to the end was reluctant to talk about her past, loved keeping many things to herself. She kept her inner life guarded I think for a mix of reasons -- memories had faded, some were sad, it was not yet time. So much of what follows will be necessarily less from her words and more from our perspective. I hope it will help us all to better understand and if you can please tell us what you know too.
